"I'm not comfortable with this set up." Ian groaned as his best friend, now girlfriend, crawled off his palm, onto the thick, lush carpet floor. In about a week the carpets would be replaced with hardwood floors, addressing Nikki's new accessibility issues. "How do you think I feel?" Nikki retorted. "I have to get used to this somehow or else I'll never be able to leave this house, let alone my bedroom." A week had passed since she'd shrunk, and every time she attempted to pass the threshold of her bedroom, a new wave of panic gripped every fiber of her being, catapulting her right back in. The world had become exceedingly overwhelming. Furniture, she'd once taken for granted, towered over her like skyscrapers. It felt like life and the universe would cave in on her at a moments notice, and she wouldn't be able to escape in time. Nikki's mother had been understanding of her daughter's plight. Always moving at a slower pace, careful movements, softer voices. Even Ian had managed to

Glitch chapter 8 Holiday Spirit
Dominic’s heavy winter boots crunched through the freshly fallen snow. Quite the blizzard had hit over the past few days, right on cue for the holiday season. Prior to the sudden snowstorm, Dom and Danni had been planning for some holiday themed activities at his place. She was still sure she could make the drive over, but Dominic had insisted on coming to get her instead. It was ridiculous for her to risk her life driving through snow drifts taller than herself when for him it was a snowy stroll through several inches of accumulation. He shook his head at the memory of her arguing because she ‘didn’t want to inconvenience him’. Like he’d ever let her get into her tiny car and brave dangerous roads. Danni was just finishing packing her bag as she felt the tremors of the approaching giant. Soft at first, easy to miss unless you were listening for them, then enough to cause items in her apartment to rattle. Grunting, she pulled the stubborn sliding glass door of her balcony open and
Dominic turned the key to his front door and opened it as gently as possible. In fact, his every movement was as gentle as possible. Danni had most likely passed out, he hadn’t felt or heard anything in the last fifteen minutes on the walk home, but he knew everything he did was amplified to her. Turning on a light, he slid off his own jacket, kicked off his shoes and stood frozen for a moment. Okay, now what. Should he wake her in case she needed to use the bathroom? Put her to bed? And where on earth would he do that? Shit, was his human bathroom even stocked? Since it was a co-hab city, all giant homes had a human bathroom set up off their own bathrooms. Everything else could be managed, but lack of an appropriate sized human toilet would make life difficult for intermingling. Dominic couldn’t remember the last time, if ever, he had a human guest over. Worst case, she’d just have to use some of his own soap until he picked some up. Carefully, he used a finger to pull back the
The art museum loomed far overhead. Rather than intimidate Danni, she was awestruck. It was gorgeous and built in a renaissance fashion, which starkly contrasted the usual modern boxy buildings of the rest of the city. The surrounding area felt like a park with its greenery and landscaping, lending even more of a castle- like ambiance to the structure. Studying the building, she found the human entrance and gave a wide berth to the giant’s door. The size of the counterpart to her door made her shudder as she crept through what must have looked like a mouse hole in comparison. If the outside was impressive, the inside was even more astounding. The ceilings naturally needed to be more than cathedral high for both races to fit, and it was made with stone and just as decorative as the outside. Large open air spaces soared in every direction and her steps echoed around her. Every inch seemed to be carved with flowing patterns, down to the handrails on the human walkways. The door she came
“So where do we go from here?” The vibrations that his voice sent through her body shook Danni out of her thoughts as she gazed at her flower. They had walked somewhat side by side for a while (her on her balcony and him beside it) checking out the paintings as planned. There was even a very brief moment of time that Danni had forgotten that he was a giant at all. Talking about the soothing paintings together with her back turned to him as they appreciated the same piece had settled her nerves substantially. For the moment. “Well, I could use a change of scenery, if you don’t mind.” She turned to face him again and was surprised to see his eyes level with her rather than his shoulder. He had leaned down to hear her better. “Agreed.” He nodded. But to where? Their original plans had been to go to that Italian restaurant and it was Dominic’s turn to feel uncomfortable at that idea. He felt like he had gotten her to relax somewhat, but he wasn’t sure how she would react to him eating
The snow didn’t show any signs of slowing down, and it was already the heaviest snowfall they had in years. In human standards, it was getting close to six feet of accumulation. Giant children carefully approached human homes and offered their services to clear houses, pathways, and cars, eager to make extra cash. Some humans happily accepted after being sure that the children in question would be careful enough to not damage any of their property. Sometimes there were definite perks to living side by side. The blizzard was a big deal for another more whimsical reason. Giants almost never got to go sled riding. Normal accumulation wasn’t anywhere close to the amount that was necessary for giants to join in the winter fun. However, when it did happen, even adults got in on the opportunity, which is why Dominic was so interested in meeting up with Liam, Danni in tow. Danni gripped the edge of his thick coat pocket, standing on tip toes and peering out at the landscape. This particular

With the door shut behind them, Derrik released Lettie beside the sink while he filled the bowl with water. Her eyes never left him, but the attention didn't feel as fearful as earlier. Once he was satisfied Derrik set the bowl down and allowed himself to look at her. She didn't flinch or turn away, maintaining eye contact like it was the only thing holding her down. A smile perked up on her lips, and with a rosy blush on her cheeks she started taking off her clothes. "This doing anything for you?" she teased as she pulled her shirt up over her head. The greater problems bearing down on them were uncharted territory, but these were familiar waters. There was nowhere she felt safer or more herself than when she was with Derrik. A dopey grin spread across his massive face. "Is it bad if I say yes?" Lettie spun around, scowling, and stormed over to him in her underwear. He'd sat down beside the counter, and was just within smacking range if she dared to get that close. "Now you're

Down the grassy expanse behind the cabin was a gently sloping hill that led to the sandy shore of a small lake. They'd picked this place because it was a popular weekend getaway, so the lake itself was well maintained and perfect for swimming. Having access to the water had been pivotal in making this their groups' mini vacation. Peter's footsteps were light as he strolled over the soft grass. Just being outside put him a little more at ease, and a quick glance down showed the same was true for his tiny passenger. Lettie had released some of the tension in her shoulders and wasn't sitting nearly as rigidly. There wasn't much he could do for either her or Keith, but Peter hoped that little things like this would count for something. Leaving the shade of the trees Peter stepped out onto the short dock. There was a simple row boat moored off to one side, but he wouldn't need it. The shoreline was dutifully cared for, and got deep enough to make for a satisfying swim. Instead of

Lettie and Derrik hadn't meant to fall asleep. Emotional exhaustion is what got them to close their eyes, and it wasn't until the beep of a car horn startled them awake that they had even noticed. They shared a sleepy smile and collected themselves to go greet their friends. Peter, Keith, and Wes were spread about the main room, hinting that they had at least tried to work out some of their arguments. No one said a word when Derrik and Lettie emerged from the bedroom, but they all glanced their way for a moment before the front door opened. Bryce and Allyson brought some life back to the cabin, bursting through the lingering apprehension with a sledgehammer of enthusiasm. "Yo, guys! We had the best idea while we were out!" Bryce announced, hefting a paper bag onto the table. "I'm gonna get a fire going, and we're gonna cook all kinds of shit on it!" He glanced around the room at the others' perplexed looks and continued to beam. "Allyson's got some stuff to make in here, and while

The unexpected guest made dinner a lively affair. Barton answered as many questions as the group could throw at him, but they didn't interrogate him the entire time. Their laughter drifted up to the stars, warming them alongside the once again roaring fire. For that single snapshot of time, nothing had changed. They were still just a group of friends on a vacation. It was cathartic in a sense, having their inhibitions stripped away. Outside of the fire's small circle of light were deepening shadows, lying in wait. Darkness saturated with fears, the unknown, and doubt. Thin creeping tendrils tried to break through the line, but they couldn't find any purchase. As easy as it would be to succumb, no one was ready for their good mood to end. Once the moon had moved well past its highest point Barton pushed himself back up onto his feet. Sorrow for the parting was mutual, but he bore his sadness with a smile. Lowering his gaze back to the table bearing his fellow cursed, he regarded them

Peter's room was simple, but functional. His bed was pushed up against the far wall, covered in a mess of jumbled up sheets and pillows. A low, wide dresser stood across from it, bearing a hefty widescreen TV. As hinted at by his joking comments there were piles of miscellaneous clothing and objects scattered about the room, but the main floor space was clear. Upon seeing it again, Peter grimaced. "Sorry bout the mess," he mumbled, kicking a crumbled up shirt over to the wall. "Hadn't really thought about what this might look like to you." While it was true the clutter was more massive than she'd anticipated, Lettie bore his apprehension with a smile. "It's not so bad," she replied. "Honestly, I've probably dealt with worse from Derrik back before this. He's not exactly a tidy person, so I'll have my work cut out for me." A muted chuckle escaped Peter, which wasn't nearly enough to chase away the gloom that settled in his eyes. He hated picturing Derrik in his forced
